How the Home Appliance Energy Cost Calculator works
The formulas, data sources, and assumptions behind every number you see above.
For each appliance, daily energy use is calculated as (watts × hours per day × quantity) ÷ 1000 = daily kWh. Monthly cost = daily kWh × 30 × your electricity rate. Annual cost = daily kWh × 365 × your electricity rate.
Wattage values come from DOE/Energy Star reference data for typical modern appliances. Adjust the quantity and hours per day to match your household.
Results are sorted by annual cost so you can quickly identify the appliances driving most of your bill.
What to know before acting on this estimate
Context, trade-offs, and next-step guidance that a simple number can't capture.
Understanding which appliances drive your electricity bill is the first step in reducing it. The 80/20 rule generally holds: a few large loads (HVAC, water heater, dryer, refrigerator) account for most of your annual energy cost. Many small loads (lighting, electronics, chargers) collectively matter, but each individually is modest.
The biggest hidden cost in many homes is electric water heating, which can run $400–$600/year. A heat pump water heater cuts that by 60%. Electric dryers ($150–$250/year) are another candidate for upgrade — heat pump dryers cut energy by 50%+.
The biggest visible savings are from LED lighting upgrades. Replacing a 60W incandescent that runs 5 hours/day saves about $13/year per bulb. In a home with 30 fixtures, that's nearly $400/year of savings for $60–$90 of LED bulbs. The payback is usually under three months.
For seasonal loads like AC, smart thermostats and proper insulation are the highest-leverage moves. For year-round loads, choosing Energy Star models when replacing an aging refrigerator, dishwasher, or washing machine pays back over the life of the appliance.
